What Is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment for a variety of skin problems and concerns. Microdermabrasion uses ultra-fine crystals to exfoliate the top layers of skin. Additionally, microdermabrasion treatment can reach the deeper layers of the skin to stimulate circulation and encourage the growth of new collagen.

How It Works

The patient’s skin will be completely cleaned and then allowed to dry. The handheld microdermabrasion device is then gently applied to the skin. The part of the device that contacts the skin, a tiny tube, will release the crystals that gently sand away damaged and dead skin. The same tube is then used to suction away the crystals and the dead skin particles. During the early part of the treatment, most patients experience only a mild rubbing sensation. As the deeper layers of skin are accessed, the sensation may feel more like a facial massage. After treatment is complete, a soothing cream is applied to the skin.

FAQs

What type of issues can microdermabrasion treat?

Microdermabrasion can treat skin issues including fine lines, wrinkles, poor skin tone, sun spots, large pores, dry skin, acne, and scars. Many patients have several of these issues at once.

How long does the treatment take?

Microdermabrasion generally takes less than an hour. Many people schedule their microdermabrasion treatment during a lunch break and return to work right away.

How many microdermabrasion treatments are required?

Every case is unique, so the total number of sessions will depend on the patient’s specific skin problems and concerns. The majority of patients need anywhere from 6-10 microdermabrasion treatments in total to get optimal results. Treatment sessions are typically scheduled 2 weeks apart.

How’s microdermabrasion different than dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is a more intensive treatment than microdermabrasion. In dermabrasion, patients can expect 1-2 weeks of skin redness and swelling, and up to 2 weeks of downtime is generally needed. Dermabrasion is best suited for more severe skin issues like deep wrinkles, severe scars, and removal of cancerous growths. Microdermabrasion is a good non-invasive treatment for mild to moderate lines and wrinkles, minor scars, and sun damage.
